EKU McNair Scholar is Keeping History Alive

Josie Teague is Keeping History Alive

EKU senior and McNair Scholar Josie Teague is featured in the spring 2023 EKU publication Celebrating Philanthropy in an article titled Keeping History Alive.  The article reports that Josie possesses a profound appreciation for history, art, and artifacts, and that although her hometown is Dawson Springs, Kentucky, she always dreamt of studying history through any and all lenses.  That ambition and the opportunity to study abroad brought Josie to EKU where she is gaining extensive knowledge in both American and European history. Between December 26, 2022 and January 8, 2023 Josie was able to conduct historical research firsthand when she visted London, England where she explored the history of London by focusing on the people of London at key moments in the city's history between 1600 and 1830.  This summer Josie is an intern in the McNair Summer Research Opportunity Program (MSROP) internship at EKU.  MSROP is an 11 week, full-time, faculty supervised, paid research internship sponsored by the EKU McNair Scholars Program.  Josie's 2023 MSROP research mentor is Dr. Carolyn Dupont, professor in the EKU Deparatment of History, Philosophy and Religous Studies.  Josie's MSROP summer research examines why western Kentucky resisted and was defiant toward school segregation in the 1950s.  Her research findings, Josie believes, will help advance African American history in Kentucky, which, Josie also believes, has been vastly understudied.
